Earn a VHS Patch!
Join VHS for a fun-filled workshop suited to your Scouting level. Each session includes a behind-the-scenes tour of our beautiful adoption center and a colorful VHS patch for each participating student. Workshops meet most or all of the requirements for their respective badges.
Workshops are 1-1/2 hours long and cost $10 per participating student, except where noted. Please contact our Humane Education department for more information or to book a workshop.
Daisies: Animal Journey
Daisies learn the basics of animal safety and pet guardianship, including the proper way to greet a dog and how paying attention to animal body language can keep you safe. Students will also meet some adoptable animals. $10 per participating student. Covers most of the Animal Journey requirements.
Brownies: Pets Badge
The Brownie workshop is focused on responsible pet guardianship, with a review of animal safety. Scouts experience a mock adoption, learning how much time, money, and effort it takes to keep a pet healthy and happy. Each participating child “adopts” a plush cat or dog to take home. We also explore how pets communicate their feelings. $10 per participating student. Covers all of the Pets Badge requirements.
Juniors: Animal Habitats Badge
Join us for a wild adventure! Juniors learn about wild animals, investigate an animal habitat, and explore endangered habitats. Discover some differences between wild and domestic animals, and learn why wild animals don’t make good pets. $10 per participating student. Covers all of the Animal Habitats Badge requirements.
Cadettes: Animal Helpers Badge
Cadettes examine the different ways in which animals help us in our everyday lives. Explore the connection between humans and animals, and discover how animals keep us safe and improve our lives. A VHS Canine Comfort team (dog and handler) will share how they make a difference in our community through pet therapy visitation. $10 per participating student. Covers all of the Animal Helpers Badge requirements.
Tiger Cubs: Pet Elective
Tiger Cubs learn the basics of animal safety and pet guardianship, including the proper way to greet a dog and how paying attention to animal body language can keep you safe. Students will also meet some of VHS’s adoptable animals. $10 per participating student.
Wolf Cubs/Webelos: Pet Care Belt Loop
What does it mean to have a pet “for life?” Scouts explore the demands of pet guardianship, such as how much it costs and what is required for proper care. Discuss different kinds of pets and which one might suit you best. Each participating child “adopts” a plush cat or dog to take home. Dog safety and how to properly greet a dog are also covered. $10 per participating student.
Boy Scouts: Pets Merit Badge
Explore the many types of animals that people keep as pets. Learn the elements of responsible pet guardianship and what it takes to keep a pet happy and healthy. Find out about issues such as pocket pets and pet overpopulation and learn what can be done to help cats and dogs in our community. $10 per participating student.
Boy Scouts: Dog Care Merit Badge*
Covers dog breed characteristics and provides an understanding of the seven major dog groups. Teaches responsible pet guardianship, the elements of dog care, the importance of training, how to keep your dog healthy, and how to handle dog-related emergencies. Workshop includes a visit from a special guest speaker who is an expert in one of the following areas: medical care, dog training, or dog temperament evaluations. *This workshop is 2 hours long and costs $15 per participating student. Covers most of the Dog Care Merit Badge requirements.
