People with Pets

Pet Therapy

The relationship between pets and people has immeasurable value on our emotional and physical health. Through Pet Therapy, Valley Humane Society brings animals to places other pets can’t go: hospitals, rehabilitation units, senior housing, long-term care facilities. We bring the joy of companionship and unconditional love to combat the effects of loneliness and isolation often experienced by individuals in these environments. Our dog & owner volunteer teams provide therapeutic pet visitations all over the Tri-Valley region; please contact us for a list of sites or to suggest a new location.

Operated from our own pet food pantry, AniMeals provides regular free meals for the dogs and cats of seniors and low-income families. Helping to care for the family pet is just one of the ways we’re working toward our goal of keeping pets in their own homes. Supplied by a grant from Petco Corporation, the pantry includes pet-related items such as litter, treats, and toys.

Jackie Barnett’s Just Like New Fund

Routine veterinary care is expensive enough, but what happens when your pet suffers a debilitating illness or accident? Jackie Barnett’s Just Like New Fund exists to help cover one-time emergency costs so your pet doesn’t have to be euthanized simply because you can’t afford the bill. Rescued animals that are sick or injured also qualify for assistance through the fund. The Animal Lover’s Boutique, which features unique animal-themed gifts for people and animals, raises money for the JLN Fund. The boutique is located year-round in the lobby of Feline Medical Center, 3160 Santa Rita Road in Pleasanton. It is open weekdays from 8 am to 6 pm; closed 12:30 to 1:30 pm for lunch. Monetary donations to the JLN Fund are always appreciated.

JLN Fund volunteers also make catnip pillows filled with potent homegrown catnip. The toys are sold for $2.50 each at the following Tri-Valley locations:

  • Pleasanton — Alisal Pet Clinic, Feline Medical Center and Valley Humane Society
  • Dublin — Tri-Valley Animal Emergency Center and VetCare
  • Livermore — Altamont Cat Hospital and Livermore Veterinary Hospital
  • San Ramon — Bollinger Canyon Animal Hospital
