Valley Humane Society has partnered with Open Heart Kitchen and Goodness Village on a new Field Veterinary program aiming to keep people and pets together. Through the program, Valley Humane is able to provide basic veterinary care for the cats and dogs of community members receiving supportive services in the Tri-Valley.
Valley Humane Society has worked with Open Heart Kitchen for many years, distributing cat and dog food through its AniMeals pet food pantry to clients facing food insecurity, helping to feed their pets and ensure animals remain in loving families instead of shelters. The new program adds an additional layer of support, addressing the lack of access to basic veterinary care often experienced by these families.
The Field Veterinary program offers one-time services such as exams, vaccinations, parasite control, and microchipping. If additional issues are uncovered, the field vet will work with clients to establish a care plan, which may include support from Valley Humane’s Medical Assistance Fund or a recommendation to seek care from a local veterinarian.
Valley Humane is grateful to the late Pearl Filipski, whose generous funding enabled the launch of the Field Veterinary program. On the program’s inaugural excursion, Dr. Carol Campbell, DVM made stops at Goodness Village and Vineyard Resource Center in Livermore, accompanied by a registered veterinary technician. The team delivered care to nearly a dozen cats and dogs, each animal clearly loved by guardians who rely on their comfort and companionship through trying times.
“No loved animal should be in a shelter,” said Melanie Sadek, President of Valley Humane Society. “Our Field Veterinary program will support underserved pet guardians in keeping their animals healthy and together with the family.” The program’s next service with be provided through CityServe in Pleasanton.
