If you have questions, or need assistance scheduling an appointment, please visit us in person during our open hours or email the surgery center using our online contact form.
Step 1: Review Requirements
Please carefully review the requirements below. If your pet does not meet our Surgery Center requirements, we recommend using your regular veterinary clinic.
Please Note: While we perform a physical exam for the purpose of administering anesthesia, our exams do not replace a regular physical exam performed by your regular veterinarian. We do not perform comprehensive cardiac exams, pre-operative bloodwork, other diagnostics, or place an IV catheter. We recommend that you consult with your veterinarian about pre-operative bloodwork prior to your pet’s appointment.
AGE: 6 months to 5 years old for Dogs; 4 months to 6 years old for Cats
WEIGHT: 4 to 75 lbs
DEPOSIT: $125 at time of scheduling
BREED: We are able to accommodate brachycephalic or “flat-face” breeds, including (for dogs) French and English Bulldogs, Boxer dogs, Boston terriers, Pekingese, Chinese Shar-Pei, Pugs, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzu, or Bull Mastiff and (for cats) Persian, Himalayan, Burmese, or British Shorthair. If your pet has a combination of an elongated soft palate, narrow nostrils (aka “stenotic nares”), and/or a shortened muzzle or flattened face, services will be performed at our veterinarian’s discretion. These breeds require extra monitoring before, during, and after surgery due to their restricted airway. Please email the surgery center using our online contact form to obtain pricing for your pet.
MEDICAL HISTORY: Animal must be healthy with no underlying medical conditions. Examples include:
- Heart murmur
- History of seizures
- Medication allergies
- Previous abdominal surgery
For any medical condition not listed above, please email us before scheduling to determine whether your pet qualifies for spay/neuter at our Surgery Center.
Vaccination Recommendations: We strongly recommend that your pet be up-to-date on vaccinations prior to their surgery appointment. This is for their protection as well as the protection of other animals coming into the facility. Please discuss appropriate vaccinations with your regular veterinarian ahead of time. If you are unable to vaccinate your pet before surgery, please let us know at check-in, and we can provide vaccines at an additional cost on the day of surgery.
Step 2: See Service & Fees
Prices include nail trimming, plastic cone collar (to prevent licking incision), and post-operative pain medication. (Dogs receive take-home medication; cats receive an injection which relieves pain for 3 days.) Payment plan options are available. Please email clinic@valleyhumane.org for more information.
Additional fees apply for animals that are in heat, pregnant, overweight, or weigh more than 65 lbs. For dogs, additional sedatives to take home are priced based on the weight of your pet. Please inquire the day of surgery.
Please note: As part of this service, all animals will receive a tattoo to indicate they have been altered (a small green line near the incision). If you do not want your animal tattooed, please seek spay/neuter services at your regular veterinary clinic.

Community Cat Trap, Neuter, and Release (TNR)
TNR is a humane and effective method for managing feral or community cat populations. Once trapped, cats are fixed and returned to their original territory. Cats’ ears are tipped while under anesthesia to easily identify them as being spayed/neutered. Vaccines are available at an additional cost. Male or female cats are $100 each. Surgeries are by appointment only. All feral cats must be brought in a humane feral cat trap. Please fill out our online form to email the Surgery Center, or call (925) 400-9820 (dial ext. 201 to reach reception) to schedule; business hours are Tuesday – Friday from 7:30 am to 5 pm.
Post-Surgery Recovery Care
Recovering after spay/neuter surgery requires special care and attention. Read Valley Humane Society’s post-surgery recovery care for dogs and cats so you are prepared to help your animal recover as smoothly and quickly as possible.
