Help Protect Donor’s Wishes: Encourage Governor Newson to Sign SB 1288

Sep 10, 2026

Inspired in part by our own experience with unnecessary delays in distributing a donor’s charitable, Valley Humane Society co-sponsored Senate Bill 1288. As of September 10, 2026, SB 1288 made it through the California Legislature and has been presented to the Governor Newsom for signature.

We’re asking for help from supporters to get it across the finish line.

SB 1288 would create clearer, more consistent standards for certain assets passing directly to beneficiaries. These changes would help families carry out their loved ones’ wishes and help ensure charitable gifts reach the organizations they were intended to support without unnecessary barriers or delays. Hear firsthand from Valley Humane President & CEO Melanie Sadek why this bill is so important.

Valley Humane is proud to co-sponsor this legislation alongside CalNonprofits and San Diego Humane Society. What began with our own experience has grown into an opportunity to improve the process for families and nonprofits across California.

Join us in asking Governor Newsom to sign SB 1288 into law!
