He was a fairly ordinary sort of dog – small, tan, perhaps part Chihuahua, possibly a little beagle mixed in.

Yet, to the woman who adopted him from the Valley Humane Society, he was perfect.

“She had come seeking a companion to help her through her grief over the loss of her son to suicide,” said VHS Executive Director Melanie Sadek. “With little more than a wag of his tail, he reached her very core. Later she told us, ‘When I tell people he’s a rescue dog, they jokingly want to know who he rescued. It was me.'”

The Valley Humane Society is hosting its first-ever “Tails at Twilight” gala benefit to support their mission of working toward a world in which every animal is loved and every person knows the love of an animal. The event takes place on Friday, May 15th, in the Bella Rosa center at Garré Vineyard & Winery.

“We wanted to do something extraordinary to shine a light on the special place pets hold in our hearts and our lives, and to celebrate that connection,” said Sadek. “We’re planning an elegant, festive affair where guests will enjoy interactions with some of our furry guests, passed hor d’oeuvres, a sit-down dinner, silent and live auctions, and a special demonstration.”
