Spay-Neuter Services

Lower cost dog and cat spay/neuter services are available through Valley Humane Society’s Phil Scholz Veterinary Surgery Center, located at 120 Spring Street in Pleasanton. Spaying and neutering your pets is beneficial to their health and helps reduce the number of unwanted animals populating our local shelters. For requirements, fees, and appointment booking, see below.

Requirements

Please be aware that there is typically a 6 to 8-week wait for available appointments. If your pet does not meet our Surgery Center requirements, we recommend using your regular veterinary clinic.

AGE: 6 months to 5 years old for Dogs; 4 months to 6 years old for Cats
WEIGHT: 4 to 75 lbs
DEPOSIT: $125 at time of scheduling

BREED: We are unable to accommodate brachycephalic or “flat-face” breeds, including (for dogs) French and English Bulldogs, Boxer dogs, Boston terriers, Pekingese, Chinese Shar-Pei, Pugs, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzu, or Bull Mastiff and (for cats) Persian, Himalayan, Burmese, or British Shorthair. In addition, if your pet has a combination of an elongated soft palate, narrow nostrils (aka “stenotic nares”), and/or a shortened muzzle or flattened face, services will be performed at our veterinarian’s discretion. We recommend these breeds are spayed or neutered with your primary veterinarian, as they need extra monitoring before, during, and after surgery due to their restricted airway.

MEDICAL HISTORY: Animal must be healthy with no underlying medical conditions. Examples include:

  • Heart murmur
  • History of seizures
  • Medication allergies
  • Previous abdominal surgery

For any medical condition not listed above, please email us before scheduling to determine whether your pet qualifies for spay/neuter at our Surgery Center.

Vaccination Recommendations: We strongly recommend that your pet be up-to-date on vaccinations prior to their surgery appointment. This is for their protection as well as the protection of other animals coming into the facility.

Please discuss appropriate vaccinations with your regular veterinarian ahead of time. If you are unable to vaccinate your pet before surgery, please let us know at check-in, and we can provide vaccines at an additional cost on the day of surgery.

Fees

Prices include nail trimming, plastic cone collar (to prevent licking incision), and post-operative pain medication. (Dogs receive take-home medication; cats receive an injection which relieves pain for 3 days.) Payment plan options are available. Please email clinic@valleyhumane.org for more information.

Additional fees apply for animals that are in heat, pregnant, overweight, or weigh more than 65 lbs. For dogs, additional sedatives to take home are priced based on the weight of your pet. Please inquire the day of surgery.

Please note: As part of this service, all animals will receive a tattoo to indicate they have been altered (a small green line near the incision). If you do not want your animal tattooed, please seek spay/neuter services at your regular veterinary clinic.
