Valley Humane Launches Matching Challenge to Raise $80,000 to Provide Veterinary Care for Local Animals
PLEASANTON, California—August 5, 2026—A generous donor has offered to match donations to Valley Humane Society’s Medical Assistance Fund, dollar for dollar, up $40,000, through August 31. Driven by a deep commitment to help expand access to veterinary care for local pets and shelter animals, the match is an exciting opportunity to raise $80,000 and deliver twice as much help to animals in our community.
Valley Humane Society created the Medical Assistance Fund specifically to expand access to veterinary care with the belief that every animal deserves access to high-quality veterinary care. The Fund provides specialty treatment for shelter animals with complex medical needs, makes spay/neuter surgeries possible for local families who otherwise can’t afford it, supports spay/neuter surgeries for community cats, and delivers veterinary care through Valley Humane’s Field Vet program to pet guardians receiving supportive services from partner organizations.
Program Impact
In 2025, the Medical Assistance Fund helped 336 animals access veterinary care they otherwise may not have received, including pets, community cats, and shelter animals. Tiger and Atom were two of those animals.
Atom appeared to be a healthy young dog, until a routine exam uncovered a congenital heart condition. The specialized cardiac care he needed was beyond what Valley Humane’s in-house team could provide. The Medical Assistance Fund allowed him to see a board-certified veterinary cardiologist and receive the advanced cardiac diagnostics, evaluation, prescription medication, and long-term treatment plan he needed to live his best life.
Tiger and his guardian were visited by Valley Humane’s Field Vet program, supported by the Medical Assistance Fund. Tiger received a basic exam and was scheduled to be neutered at the organization’s Phil Scholz Veterinary Surgery Center. When he arrived for his follow-up appointment, however, the brown tabby cat had an accidental accessory: a fishhook was embedded in his lip. The Medical Assistance Fund enabled Tiger to be sedated and the hook safely removed by Valley Humane’s surgical team, returning him home free from pain.
Because of compassionate donor support for the Medical Assistance Fund, hundreds of animals like Atom and Tiger have received medical care otherwise unavailable to them. The public is invited to join Valley Humane in keeping pets healthy, families together, and our community strong by making a donation to the Medical Assistance Fund, helping to meet the $40,000 match and ultimately providing $80,000 in veterinary care for local animals in need.
