Medical Assistance Fund: Darrell Lea’s Story

Oct 9, 2026

One of the critical functions of Valley Humane Society’s Medical Assistance Fund is making sure shelter cats and dogs have access to lifesaving medical treatment when it falls outside the scope of what we can provide in-house…no matter when it’s needed.

A Tiny Kitten With a BIG Emergency

For tiny kitten Darrell Lea, everything happened so quickly. A serious abscess had opened and was draining so heavily, our team knew he needed emergency veterinary care right away.

At nearby veterinary emergency hospital VEG ER for Pets in San Ramon, doctors found a large, infected wound that needed immediate treatment. Darrell Lea was sedated while they thoroughly cleaned and flushed the area, treated the damaged tissue, packed and bandaged the wound, and provided medication to prevent pain and infection.

With continued care from Valley Humane and his foster, Darrell Lea was soon healing beautifully and back to being his playful, snuggly kitten self. Before long, he was adopted and went home with a family of his own.

The Fund Making a HUGE Impact for Animals

That’s what the Medical Assistance Fund makes possible: helping animals in our community receive the veterinary care they need so they can live full, happy lives.

Every gift to this donor-driven designated fund is invested directly in expanding access to veterinary care. In addition to providing specialty treatment for shelter animals with complex medical needs, the Medical Assistance Fund makes spay/neuter surgeries possible for local families who otherwise can’t afford it, supports spay/neuter surgeries for community cats, and delivers veterinary care through Valley Humane’s Field Vet program to pet guardians receiving supportive services from partner organizations.

Whether it’s a shelter pet recovering from a complex illness, a family who needs help accessing preventive care, a community cat receiving a life-changing surgery, or a tiny Chihuahua carrying an unbelievably large bladder stone, Valley Humane’s Medical Assistance Fund helps ensure more animals receive the veterinary care they need.
