Adoptable Spotlight: Carey Martin, A Sun-Loving Small Dog

Oct 5, 2026

If you’re looking to adopt a small dog who knows exactly how to enjoy a sunny afternoon, it’s Carey Martin. This 10-pound blond sweetheart has spent the summer perfecting her favorite hobby: finding the warmest patch of grass in the yard and settling in for a long, golden nap.

Carey has been in Valley Humane Society’s care since June, living with a loving foster family while she waits for her forever home.

A Devoted Mama Ready for Her Own Home

Carey arrived at Valley Humane with two tots in tow. She was a loving, dedicated mama who made sure her pups had everything they needed. Those pups have since been neutered and adopted, and they’re thriving with their new families.

Now it’s Carey’s turn. She poured her heart into raising her little ones, and she’s ready for a home where she can be the one who gets doted on.

Ask Carey’s foster mom about her favorite things and the list starts with sunshine. Carey loves to stretch out in a bright spot and soak up the warmth for as long as the sun allows.

When she’s ready for some action, she runs laps through the grass and takes her squirrel patrol very seriously. Any squirrel brave enough to cross the fence line can expect an enthusiastic escort back to the trees!

Carey sets her own pace. She’ll come to you for affection, soak it up, take a little break, then circle back for more. Once you learn her rhythm, you’ll see what a sweet, affectionate companion she is.

Why This Small Dog for Adoption Makes a Great Housemate

Carey is a low-key house dog with plenty of qualities that make everyday life easy:

  • House-trained. She already knows the routine.
  • Crate-trained. She’s comfortable with a cozy crate of her own.
  • A great eater. Mealtime is one of her favorite events of the day.
  • A loyal companion. Carey’s happiest when she can hang out near her person, whether you’re working, reading, or relaxing.

She’s a young adult, estimated between one and four years old, so she has plenty of sunny afternoons ahead of her.

Carey is a backyard girl through and through. She doesn’t like to go out for walks on leash, so she’ll be happiest in a home with a secure, fenced yard where she can run, explore, and sunbathe at her own pace. Her daily exercise comes from yard time and play.

Her ideal match is a relaxed household with a lot of sunny spots and a person who enjoys having a small, steady companion nearby. If your idea of a perfect weekend involves a lawn chair, a good book, and a dog stretched out in the sun beside you, Carey is ready to join you.
