As wildfires continue to burn in the Los Angeles area, many concerned animal lovers from our own San Francisco Bay Area are scrambling to learn what they can do help. Valley Humane Society has received a slew of inquiries from supporters, who recognize us as a trusted source of information on matters of animal welfare.
To channel that outpouring of compassion, here is an update on the situation, along with the best ways for people to help companion animals in Southern California right now.
Why Valley Humane is a Trusted Source
For seven years, Valley Humane’s President, Melanie Sadek, has served on the board of the California Animal Welfare Association, concluding her term as President on July 1, 2024. She continues to serve as Chair of their Advocacy and Legislative Committee. This organization represents both government and nonprofit animal shelters across the state, and a core part of its mission is disaster response.
What Is Happening (as of 1/16/25)
Currently, donations of hard goods for animals are not needed. The Pasadena Humane Society, for example, has already exceeded its storage capacity for donated items. Instead, financial donations are the most impactful way to help. Funds can be directed toward immediate needs such as medications and veterinary care. Even after the disaster subsides, these donations will support animals in shelters—many of whom may not be able to reunite with their families due to housing restrictions on pets (e.g., size, breed, or quantity limits).
Where to Donate
Please consider donating to the following organizations actively supporting animals impacted by the fires:
Clarification on Animal Transport
There has been some confusion about animals being transported out of the Los Angeles area. Here’s the current situation:
- Pasadena Humane Society is housing 400 animals displaced by the fires. These animals are not being transported out because the goal is to keep them close for potential reunification with their owners.
- Animals being relocated are adoptable animals not directly affected by the fires. Relocating these animals helps ease the burden on local shelters, allowing them to focus on incoming fire-related cases.
Fostering Opportunities
Encourage friends or family in Southern California who can temporarily foster the animals of families impacted by the fire to visit Home-to-Home. Entering a Southern California zip code and navigating to the foster tab will connect available fosters with animals in need of temporary housing.
At Valley Humane, our hearts are warmed by our community’s continued compassion and dedication to animal welfare. Your support makes a huge difference for animals and their families during this challenging time.
